EU To Give €3.8 Million For Rehab Facilities In The Philippines

There are two types of rehab facilities, the privately funded such as California top rehab and the government funded. The latter requires funds from the government in order to continue its operation since the patients are receiving free treatments. Drug rehab facilities in the Philippines are receiving support from the European Union through the funding worth €3.8 million or equivalent to 241.6 million in Philippine currency.

According to the International Cooperation and Development’s director general, Stefano Maservisi, the money will be sent straight to the country’s Department of Health. This was decided despite the fact that the president of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, refused to receive help from the European Union.

The funds came from the allotted €260 million for the Philippines to add in their development assistance. It was originally intended to be used for the peace process in Mindanao, to help build renewable energy projects and to create more jobs in the country.

In a news conference, Maservisi said that the money for the drug rehab facilities is the last essential sector which they are going to funnel funds in.

The president has had direct disagreement of the EU because they are not happy with the way the PH government is handling war on drugs. On Duterte’s part, he sees this as a form of meddling when the issue is of domestic concern. This is also the main reason why he refused to accept the €6 million aid the EU offered to send in 2017.

Duterte has been very vocal when it comes to the issue because he thinks that the EU is sending assistance in exchange for conditions like regulating the human rights law in the country.

EU remains to be one of the highest donors to the Philippines and also a leading trading partner.

Maservisi denied the allegations made by the president and further explained that their action is based solely on the PCA agreement that the PH signed.

Issues aside, the Palace is happy with their funding for the drug rehab facilities. The country is yet to see the same facilities as the California top rehab because of lack of funding and no private companies are opening shop in the Philippines.
